Yesterday, Residents and their families celebrated Oktoberfest at St Mary’s Home in the auditorium, which was arrayed in a blaze of bright autumnal red, gold and orange colors. The display of carved pumpkins, bundles of straw and cornhusk decorations, more than one could count, really brought the season to life.
In keeping with the German-theme, guests enjoyed lively sounds of oompah music and festive polkas. Delicious bratwurst, sauerkraut, and other Bavarian favorites were plentiful at the “Harvest Café.”
Creative and amusing activities designed for all ages added to the fun. Everyone who entered the biergarten was given packs of Funny Money coupons, the event’s “official currency.” The coupons could be exchanged to “buy” food or to play any, or all, of the exciting games such as A Tootsie Pop in a Hay Stack; Corn Pick’ in Toss; Harvest Toss and Fields of Wheat, with the hope of winning sweet prizes.
Resident Frank D. enjoyed great success at the Harvest Toss and Corn Pick ‘in Toss areas. A few minutes later his cousins Alan and Jessica and Alan’s daughter joined him. Resident Jane K. and her daughter Kathy were first in line for the Corn Pick’ in Toss, which required participants to toss (in mid-air) popcorn the required distance of three feet into one of the several small bags that hung three to five feet above the floor. By tossing five little popped corn pieces into any one of the bags – you’re a winner! When Caidan, Resident Eleanor K.’s six-year-old great-grandson, and his mother Colleen took their turns, the sounds of their laughter made everyone smile!
Jugan Terrace Resident Serena R. was the triple-crown winner of the Corn Pick ‘in Toss game, with increasing scores of 5 to 12 to an amazing 17 popcorn pieces successfully landing into one of several small brown bags from afar. She even made it look easy while doing it! Resident Brother Regis tried his luck at the Corn Pick ‘in Toss and finally all of the Little Sisters of the Poor !!!!
By far, my best Oktoberfest ever! Prost!
An Oktoberfest Filled with Luck, Laughter and Love
