Living Stations of the Cross
In the final weeks of Lent, St. Mary’s Home has been preparing with great fervor and devotion for the blessed, glorious season of Easter. On Friday, March 22, Residents, Sisters, guests, and staff gathered in our auditorium to witness a “Living Stations of the Cross.”
Several staff members undertook roles as either actors or tech crew, and under the direction of Mother Margaret and the artistic direction of Sister Marie Cecilia, everyone rehearsed diligently through the week to mount this special performance.
For each step in the Passion of Christ, from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to his entombment, our actors posed silently and without movement to represent this powerful journey. Narration, performed by Sister Ann and Beverly Davis, accompanied the simple tableaux (“living pictures”) and invited the audience to reflect on the final moments of Jesus’ life and his sacrifice for us. A choir of students from the Newman Center at University of Illinois Chicago sang “Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)” between tableaux, framing each scene and enhancing the poignancy of each moment.
Retracing the journey of Jesus to Calvary, this Living Stations of the Cross provided a special opportunity for our community to reflect on our own faith journey during this holy time.
