Things are freezing here in the Windy City! Temperatures on January 21 were set to be as low as -6 degrees Fahrenheit with a high of 3 degrees Fahrenheit. At least we weren’t in New Orleans this day. “The Big Easy” received 10 inches of snow! To compare on that same day, the weather in the North Pole was a “toasty” 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Colder weather than the North Pole? Now that’s cold! But what better way to make the best of a chilly situation than throwing a Polar Vortex Party!
To warm hearts and liven spirits, Residents gathered into our cozy auditorium, which had been decked out in blue and white winter decorations. A roaming bar cart traveled through the aisles, offering our Residents delicious drink options to warm them from the inside out. A special lunch was served: tacos, chips and guacamole, and Mother Margaret’s homemade ham and bean soup! The weather was so chilly that we were cheerfully surprised with a visit from a penguin, a polar bear, and a snowman—three of our fun-loving staff members in costumes, at least! Residents were delighted to laugh along with our staff as they came around to give hugs and make Residents smile.
As our foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, said, “making the elderly happy – that is what counts.” We are so happy to have been able to give our Residents a wonderful party full of joy and fun!
