God Bless Our Vets

By November 14, 2024No Comments

On Monday, November 11, St. Mary’s Home decorated the auditorium in red, white and blue to honor the courageous service of our Home’s Veterans and the freedoms that their service makes possible.

We began the morning, hand on heart, with the singing of the National Anthem. Aided by the Chicago Police Officers of the 18th District, Residents of St. Mary’s Home and Jugan Terrace who served in the arm forces were able to be recognized for the sacrifices they made for our country. Officers took turns shaking the hands of each veteran as they presented them with a gift bag and a commemorative pin. Our brave vets stood proudly as the pin was secured to their lapels while the rest of the room clapped and cheered in recognition. We were also able to recognize previous Residents who bravely served that have passed away. Though they are no longer with us, their service will not be forgotten.

Residents were delighted by a surprise visit from Alderman Brian Hopkins, who delivered a heartfelt speech thanking our vets for their sacrifice as well as their courage. After the presentation, Residents, guests, staff and Sisters enjoyed coffee and pastries, telling stories, making new friends and simply loving being with each other.

We are both honored and blessed to have so many amazing veterans living here in our Home. May we never forget their sacrifices. And may we never take for granted our freedom they fought so hard to preserve.
