The act of begging has been at the heart of our mission, ever since St. Jeanne Jugan would roam the streets of France asking kind souls to donate what they could to help care for the elderly poor. Earlier last year, our well-loved refrigerated cargo van, with frequent trips to the mechanic and over 170,000 miles, had reached the end of the road. This was a worrisome issue, as our “Begging Sister” contacts business and benefactors asking for donations of food and supplies, so it was imperative for her to have a reliable vehicle to transport these items back to St. Mary’s Home.
Thanks to you, we surpassed our goal of $75,000 to fund our new set of wheels. Our Begging Sister, Sister Bernadette, is now able to easily travel and transport donations without all of the previous stop and go—except from Chicago traffic, of course.
We are truly humbled by your generosity, kindness, and community spirit. Our Home has decided to inscribe “Provided by our generous benefactors” on the side of our cargo van, so we and others may never forget how greatly you have aided us. Thank you for coming together to fund our Home’s great need!
