Lu-Wow! – Celebrating World Grandparents and Elderly Day
On Sunday July 28, Residents and their families came together to celebrate World Grandparents and Elderly Day. Established in 2021 by Pope Francis, this day is celebrated each year on the fourth Sunday of July, to coincide with the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, grandparents of Jesus. This occasion honors the bonds between elders and youth, grandparents and grandchildren. And what better way to kick off such a sweet summer celebration of their ohana (family) than with a luau! Hosted by Association Jeanne Jugan, guests were greeted with tropical music and colorful leis to get into the party mood. Decorative, dangling displays of photos showcasing Residents throughout their lives hung from the ceiling at the entrance of the Auditorium. Hula dancers livened Residents’ spirits as they were invited to shimmy and sway along with them. Kids were invited to show off their limbo skills—even Sr. Bernadette got in on the fun! And of course, what would a luau be without the food? Friends enthusiastically lined up at the buffet table to chow down on a feast of mouth-watering Hawaiian treats—spam fries, Hawaiian fried rice, and a 100-pound roasted pig—donated generously by our benefactors! He aha ka pā’ina! (What a party!)
